Name/Title
Portobello in 1934Entry/Object ID
2015.007.0007Description
Digital scan of a 6 5/8" h x 8 1/2" w black and white aerial photo of Portobello. The story and a half house is obscured by trees. A small outbuilding is barely visible in a hedge. "20A" is in white ink in the lower left corner. There was a sizable wharf at Portobello, so the road in the foreground was likely a rolling road.

Text on separate sheet: "Portobello built about 1760 by a ship mate of Lawrence Washington & named for Portobello [illegible] now belongs to Senator Coad of Maryland far too modernized & poorly restored"
The photograph was possibly taken by Aloysius King, editor of the St. Mary's Beacon. The original print is owned by Historic St. Mary's City, which loaned it to the St. Mary's County Historical Society for scanning.Collection
