Postcard of Whalley AbbeyEntry/Object ID
2014.013.0215Description
The front of this postcard is a colored photograph of what appears to be an interior shot of Whalley Abbey. The foreground is covered mostly by grass but parts of the stone groundwork are still present in places. The midground contains a large portion of a stonework wall with arched doorways. Lastly, in the background off to the left a few trees can be seen.
On the back of the postcard in the bottom left corner is information regarding the photo. It states that construction on Whalley Abbey began in 1295 but was not fully completed until the late 1600s. Henry VIII confiscated it after the last abbot had been executed in 1537. It was a private house until the church bought it back in 1923. In the middle of the postcard at the top is the name of the photographer J. Arthur Dixon.Collection
