2026.011.0001Description
These are four postcards from various locations in the United States. Someone are from friends and one is from Elliot's father, J. Marshall Dent. All of which are from 1913.
The first postcard is from J. Marshall Dent. The front is a black and white shot of "Dewell House" which is located in Plymouth, Connecticut. The location is written in the bottom right corner on the front along with the year 1913. On the back is a short message from J. Marshall Dent where he is asking Elliot to come and sit in his hammock together. The postcard was sent to Elliot E. Dent in Atlanta, Georgia at the Atlanta Baseball Club. The date it was sent was July 25th, 1913.
The second postcard is from a gentleman named Warren. The front is a colored piece depicting "Montgomery St. Looking East, Montgomery, Alabama". The street is seen continuing on into the city proper. The back of the postcard has a message from Warren where he congratulates the pennant winning team and mentions hoping to see Elliot play next week. On the right side the postage stamp gives the date of September 8th, 1913. Once again the receiving address is the Atlanta Baseball Club.
The third postcard is from a man named Buck(?). On the front of the postcard is a colored piece showing "Rip Raps (Fort Wool) Hampton Roads, Fortress Monroe, VA". A river is seen with a strip of land containing the fort in the middle of the river. The message talks about Buck(?) having some excitement the other night at a high school. He also says he was the drunk the night before and feels rotten on the day he sent this postcard. The postcard itself is dated to June 4th, 1913.
Finally, the last postcard is from a indecipherable name. The front being a colored piece of Peachtree Street somewhere in Georgia throughout the years along with one portion being of Atlanta during the Civil War. The top left is of Peachtree Street during 1889, the top right is of the street during 1905 and the bottom is somewhere in Atlanta, Georgia during 1864. The message on the back is of the writer saying Elliot has been in their thoughts because Elliot won a game. They make note of Elliot becoming quite a "runner" and a "knocker". The right side of the back is addressed to Elliot at a Hotel Morris in Birmingham, Alabama. The date the postcard was sent was August 2nd, 1913.Collection
