This pale buff poster on very light weight paper advertises an auction of town lots in Newnan, Georgia, the home of Joseph Hugh Dent, who married Fannie Dent of St. Mary's County. Mr. Dent was a businessman in Newnan for several years. The poster has a rough outline of the plat of the numbered lots with owners' names printed on their lots. Mr. Dent owned one lot. At this auction on December 6, 1899, however, he purchased fourteen more lots. He also sold his original lot to the man who owned all the rest of the block. If I understand the figures on the plat, Mr. Dent spent around $2417 on the land.
Text at head of poster: "Auction sale of forty nice residence lots including seven houses on the premises in Newnan by the Newnan Land Co. to take place on Wednesday, December 6, 1899. [In much smaller print] in 1888 the Newnan Land Co. was organized and purchased 56 acres of land adjoining the S.G. & N.A. R.R. which was then native forest except for one small cottage ... now it is the best improved location in the city ... It is strictly yet what it was designed to be used for--homes for white people ... terms: one-third cash, one-third twelve months, one-third in two years with interest at six per cent ... Water main ... electric lights ... dinner will be served on the grounds free. ... Come see the property and buy you a home."
There were six directors of the Newnan Land Company, but Mr. Dent was not among them.Collection
