Program for the dinner held to honor Edmund A. Walsh, S.J. on his fiftieth anniversary as a member of the Society of Jesus. The dinner was held at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C. on November 15, 1952. The heavy covers are a dark gold color with black print and an elaborate border that begins 1/2" from each edge. Twined leaves and vines form a border that is 1 1/4" wide on the verticals, is 2" to 1 3/4" on the top and 2 3/8" wide on the bottom. A cinquefoil flower is in each lower corner. In the center of the lower border is the seal of the University in a 2 1/4" circle surrounded by leaves and vines. The banner in the center says, "Whereas, in the Good book it is written:--Thou shalt sanctify the 50th year, and ... Whereas, Edmund A. Walsh, S.J., Ph.D., L.L.D., D. Litt. has spent a half century of his allotted years as member of the Society of Jesus in unbroken service to God, country, and fellow men in diverse regions of the world, therefore ... We, the Georgetown University Club of Washington, together with certain citizens of the Capital City of the Nation, do hereby tender the aforesaid Jubilarian this testimonial of civic appreciation, neighborly respect and hearty good cheer. Done, at the Mayflower Hotel in the District of Columbia on the evening of the fifteenth day of November, in the year of Our Lord, one thousand nine hundred and fifty two. The Committee, The Speakers, Guests and Friends." On the back cover is printed "Ad Multos Annos" in the center of the space. Unfortunately, the black ink came off easily on one's fingers, so there are smears of black all over the outside. On the inside of the front cover is a shadow of the decoration on the front, probably from being in a stack of opened covers before the programs were completed. Inside are 4 pages of 11 7/8" x 8 7/8" paper stapled together in the center and then stapled in 2 locations to the cover. The first page is a very nice black and white drawing of Father Walsh, 8 5/8"h x 6 "w surrounded by a border of branches and flowers. Father Walsh is seated at a table with his hands just on the edge near an opened book. One could infer a mischievous glint in his eye. He has signed the white space outside the picture in blue ink. The next two pages is a chronology of Father Walsh's life. The next page is the menu for the dinner--a Thanksgiving-style dinner. Next is the program, with seven people listed as greeting the jubilarian. The remaining three pages list the members of various committees and Mr. Beitzell is one of 6 vice-chairs. Loose in the program are 8 sheets listing the occupants of the tables--it appears there were 59 tables, plus head tables, so there were nearly 500 people in attendance. Mr. Beitzell is listed as the first person at the speakers' table.Collection
