October 1, 1978 The National Society of Colonial Dames of America in the State of Maryland Southern Maryland Regional Committee arranged for a copy of a portrait of Thomas Harris and presented it to be hung in the Reconstructed Port Tobacco Courthouse. "... a copy in oil of a lost portrait of Mr. Harris. This portrait was originally painted by either Charles Willson or James Peale and has been copied in the manner of Peale from a photograph of the original." The clipping of 1937 [see 2010.002.0067] noted the presentation of a photograph of the original painting, so somehow, between 1937 and 1978, the painting went missing. In another part of the ceremony, Virginia Duke presented some original Harris papers to the Charles County Historical Society.
