Description

Carte-de-visite in sepia tones 3 3/4"h x 2 3/16"w of Rebecca Spalding Dunbar Fenwick. This is a full length seated portrait in a photographer's studio. On the left is a table with elaborate curved wooden legs and a white [marble?] top. The subject has her right arm on the table. Behind the table is a drape that hangs to the table and is behind the subject's right arm. The wall behind the subject is plain. She is seated on a chair with an upholstered [needlepoint?] back and a wooden frame. Mrs. Fenwick turns her head very slightly to the left to look at the camera . She has dark hair firmly parted in the middle and pulled behind her head with either a decorative piece framing her head or her hair is in a long braid that frames her head. She has a slight smile. She has a small lace collar with a pin at her throat. Her dress is of some dark shiny material with sleeves that are fairly narrow and gathered to the elbow and then very full to the wrist. There is a deep lace cuff at the wrist. There appears to be a two sided ruffle down the bodice, a self belt and a very full skirt that fills the lower third of the photo. It appears to be a very expensive dress. She appears to have a sizable ring on the third finger of her left hand. The photo is printed on a warm beige card base with a 1/4" space at the bottom to write the subject's name. "Aunt Beck" is written in pencil. The studio had a shield on the verso with a banner underneath "Bendann Bros. 207 Baltimore St." Also on the verso is a long note, part in pencil and part in blue ink. "Mrs. Rebecca Spalding Dunbar Fenwick, mother of J. Felix and Harry B and Charlotte Fenwick & Cora Dunbar. Cora Dunbar married Semmes Fenwick. They had Ellen [and?] Josephine (Jessie). Felix Fenwick's 1st wife was Jane Semmes and Semmes Fenwick and Jessie 2 each were his children." This piece was in the upper center of page 2 of the dark red photograph album.
