This is the record for the scanned version of Benjamin Tippett's survey book B. Some pages are damaged or otherwise un-numbered, so the references will be to a page number if one is present or the number of a scan, if that is all there is. Each scan shows two pages, so a reference may be to scan 46A for the left page and scan 46B for the right page. This book had alphabet tabs at the beginning to form an index. Pages in that area are more likely to be damaged than in another part of the book. The paper in this book is better than in Book A, so there is virtually no ink bleed through. The spine is not compromised. The many drawings are carefully done. There is a placard at the end of the scan with additional information about the book's history. According to Regina Hammett, Tippett was the official county surveyor in 1850 and 1852. He made his living surveying all his adult life, sometimes as a contractor for whomever the official county surveyor was at the time, e.g., p. 97 et seq. Tippett helpfully refers to related surveys in Book A with a page reference as appropriate. George B. Dent began appearing in the record as Tippett's assistant? apprentice? in the 1870s. Tippett included his Treatise on Resurveying near the end of the book with observations on the migration of magnetic north, the changes in surveying equipment, and the human element of land recording. When searching for properties and names, be sure to consider alternate spellings. See P. 27 for an example.
Scan 1A Tippett willed the book to the Circuit Court of Saint Mary's County. Zachariah Tippett, executor, delivered the book to J. Frank Ford, Clerk of the Court, on March 13, 1877.
Scan 1B Tippett noted the "variation of the magnetic needle" on March 21, 1864.
Scan 2A Empty
Scan 2B Begin index. There are four columns: wide ones for text and narrow ones for page numbers. There is a large dark letter at the top of the two text columns. The left column is mostly property names, with the right column for personal names. Tippett only occasionally used the page number columns; mostly the page number is right by the entry. In these scans, the personal names often indicated a transfer of land from ... to ....
Scan 3A Letter A property names in the left column, personal names beginning with B in the right column
Scan 3B Letter B property names in each column
Scan 4A Mostly letter C personal names in the left column, one letter D property name in the right column
Scan 4B Letter C property names in the left column, letter D property names in the right column
Scan 5A Letter F personal names in the left column, the page list for excavations and embankments, and the page list for Tippett's method of calculation in the right column
Scan 5B Letter E property names in the left column, letter F property names in the right column
Scan 6A Letter G personal names and one property name in the left column, letter H personal and property names in the right column
Scan 6B Letter G property names in the left column, Letter H property names in the right column
Scan 7A Letter J personal and property names in the left column, right column is empty
Scan 7B Even though the left column header letter looks like a J, it must be an I because all the personal and property names begin with letter I; all the personal and property names in the left column begin with letter K
Scan 8A Letter L personal names, one property name, and two references to lists of smaller properties within a large parcel in the left column, Letter M personal names and one property name in the right column
Scan 8B Letter L property names in the left column, letter M property names in the right column
Scan 9A Empty
Scan 9B Letter N personal and property names in the left column, four letter O property names and a reference to possibly a store in the right column
Scan 10A Letter P for "Problem" with references to mathematical problems and calculations in the book in the left column, at the top of the right column is one letter Q personal name and farther down the page are several letter P property names
Scan 10B Letter P property and personal names in the left column, letter R personal and property names in the right column
Scan 11A Letter S property names in the left column, letter T personal names in the right column
Scan 11B Letter S property and personal names in the left column, letter T property names in the right column, many of the names are The Plains or The Ridge, etc.
Scan 12A The entire page is more mathematical problems
Scan 12B Letter U personal names, farther down the left column is one letter W personal name, in the right column are letter W personal and property names
Scan 13A The entire page is more mathematical problems
Scan 13B One letter Y property name
Pages 1-23 are not present, but perhaps are represented by the index scans.

Page 51 An explanation for the above continued. The bottom half of the page contained the plat.
Page 52 Robert Shanks and the heirs of Perry Shanks asked Tippett to run a line between their properties, but Tippett was not confident the parties used the correct information. Two surveys of Piney Point, one in 1800 and one in 1859.

Page 61 Survey of Carroll's Gift, Berwick, Constantinople, etc. done in 1859. There is an interesting note at the bottom of the page.
Page 62 Following on the previous page, there is a survey by compromise of Constantinople, but it was not accepted. Hayden's Fair aka Finchley was surveyed in 1859 and a compromise line between William Biscoe and Oscar Miles was surveyed at about the same time.
Page 63 John Kilgour commissioned the division of land in Church Swamp in Saint Clement's Manor into two lots. Joseph Dunbar did the work in 1824. Tippett resurveyed the second lot in 1859.
Page 64-65 Dunbar surveyed the division of James Edgerton's real estate in 1814, including Locust Plains and Batchelor's Hope. Tippett noted the subsequent history of the property and his own surveys done in the 1840s.
Page 66-67 Notley's Addition with Part of Hayden's Fair on each side of Backwoods Road. Tippett bitterly noted that Dr. R. P. Blakistone refused to pay him for his work. There was a court case about it while Tippett was in Louisiana [no reason mentioned] and Tippett lost. The rest of the page is a survey of South Hampton.
Page 68 More about South Hampton, Notley's Addition and Hayden's Fair. In April 1859, surveyor Ennals Roszell laid off four lots on Saint George's island. Trice's Lot was first.

Page 107 Tippett included his field notes and a final plat of an 1859 survey for the Methodist parsonage land in Wolseley Manor. He suspected a serious error in the older surveys, but by 1867, he had become satisfied with the documentation.
