Scope and Content

1 register ; 13 3/4"h x 8 1/2"w The brown cover of this register identifies it as belonging to Drayden School, number 2 in the 2nd district. There are three pages of directions for entering data in the book. Page 4 is a full page, entitled "Record of Attendance" with space for the school number, district number, and name of the county. Forty-five spaces are available for listing students by name, birthdate, age, and date of first attendance. The continuing pages are 12 5/8"h x 4 1/2"w, each covering an entire month's worth of attendance data for the months September to June. Then there is another full-size page with space for final attendance data for the first year on one side and the pupil roll in the new school year on the verso. After the second set of small monthly attendance pages there is another full page for year end attendance figures. The register usually had an envelope pasted in the back in which a heavy card where year-end data for each year could be entered. Presumably this was submitted to the central administration. In this register, the cover identifies this as the Drayden School, no. 2, district 2, colored, county St. Mary's, grades 1-7, teacher Luther H. Stuckey. Forty students are entered in the first roll, with birth date, age, and the date of his/her admission to school. Most children entered on September 28, 1931 and the week following. The teacher is listed as Charles T. Brown. Attendance data was kept until June 1, 1932. Mr. Brown entered only the grade a student should be in for the following year. No teacher name was entered for the following year, but the second enrollment sheet lists thirty-eight students arriving on October 3, 1932 with attendance data until June 1, 1933. Only the grade to which the pupil should be assigned the following year was recorded on the closing sheet. Two students graduated. The envelope on the inside back cover is present. The card was filled out by Mr. Stuckey for an unnamed year and 1932-33. Perhaps he was called in to take Mr. Brown's place during the first school year. There is a third roster of students beginning with October 1933 that is loose and probably does not belong in this book. Thirty-seven students enrolled at the beginning of the year.
