Scope and Content

1 register ; 11 1/4"h x 8 3/8"w The brown cover of this register identifies it as belonging to Drayden School, number 2 in the 2nd district. There are four pages of directions for entering data in the book. Page 5 is a full page, entitled "Record of Attendance" with space for the school number, district number, and name of the county. Forty-five spaces are available for listing students by name, birth date, age, and date of first attendance. The continuing pages are 12 5/8"h x 4 1/2"w, each covering an entire month's worth of attendance data for the months September to June. Then there is another full-size page with space for final attendance data for the first year on one side and the pupil roll in the new school year on the verso. After the second set of small monthly attendance pages there is another full page for year end attendance figures. The register usually had an envelope pasted in the back in which there was a heavy card where year-end data for each year could be entered. Presumably this was submitted to the central administration. In this register, the cover identifies this as the Drayden School, no. 2, district 2, colored, county St. Mary's, grades 1-7, teacher Carrie Tilghman. Nineteen students are entered in the first roll, with birth date, age, and the date of his/her admission to school. Most children entered on September 3, 1941 and the week following. Attendance data was kept until May 29, 1942. Ms. Tilghman entered an overall indication of pupil quality and the grade a student should be in for the following year. Carrie Tilghman was the teacher for the following year, and the second enrollment sheet lists twelve students arriving on September 14, 1942 with attendance data only until September 22, 1942. No other data was entered and no explanation was provided. The envelope on the inside back cover is present, and the card is filled out, without date, on one side. As of March, 2018, there are still eight living members of Drayden School students: Robert Brooks, Eva M. Stuckey Chesley, Mary F. Greene, Ernestine Greene, Isabel Dyson Waters, Dorothy Lane Thomas, and Frank D. Travers. When Mr. Travers looked at the last list of students, he said all the Brown children moved to Baltimore. Miss Tilghman married a Mr. Statesman and was a stepmother to his children. She remained in the county for many years.
