Scope and Content

1 register ; 13 3/4"h x 8 1/2"w The brown cover of this register identifies it as belonging to Ridge School, number 2 in the 1st district. There are three pages of directions for entering data in the book. Page 4 is a full page, entitled "Record of Attendance" with space for the school number, district number, and name of the county. Forty-five spaces are available for listing students by name, birthdate, age, and date of first attendance. The continuing pages are 12 5/8"h x 4 1/2"w, each covering an entire month's worth of attendance data for the months October to June. Then there is another full-size page with space for final attendance data for the first year on one side and the pupil roll in the new school year on the verso. After the second set of small monthly attendance pages there is another full page for year end attendance figures. The register usually had an envelope pasted in the back in which a heavy card with spaces for year-end data for each year could be entered. Presumably this was submitted to the central administration. In this register, the cover identifies as belonging to the Ridge School, no. 2, district 1, county St. Mary's, grades 1-7, teacher M. B. Saunders, crossed out and H. B. Ewell added. Ninteen students are entered in the first roll, with birth date, age, and the date of his/her admission to school. Most children entered on September 29 and 30. Attendance data was kept until June 1, 1932. Ms. Saunders was the teacher that year and Ms. Ewell took over for the following year. A second enrollment sheet lists seventeen students arriving on October 3, with attendance data until January 31, [1933]. No cumulative attendance data is recorded for the second year. The envelope and card from the inside back cover are present; the card was removed to a folder more hospitable to paper. Miss Saunders made quite complete entries on the card and Miss Ewell covered the four months school was in session. An Admission, Promotion and Discharge card was loose in this book; one pupil left in early January, 1932, possibly for St. Peter Claver School. There were also two loose goldenrod sheets called Age Grade Table dated November 30, 1929 and November 30, 1931. These were for the Ridge School, no. 2, District 1. Bertha B. Wade was the teacher in 1929 and Marilee B. Saunders was the teacher in 1931. I believe this form tried to show how many over-age children were in various grades. All this loose material is in a folder in the register.
