Scope and Content

1 folder ; J. A. Chappelear of Washington, D.C. did the drawings for the renovation of an unknown house. His name and address is stamped on the back of each sheet, but there are no other names or any dates at all. The primary feature of the house is a massive wrap-around porch. There are six unnumbered sheets of varying sizes, more or less 17" x 15" at a scale of 1/4"=1'. There were no electrical or mechanical sheets and no heat source was indicated in the house. Sheet [1] First Floor Plan The house was 24' 3" by 32' 3" plus a 10' x 12' 9' kitchen wing. The wrap-around porch was 10' deep and two bays off the kitchen, five bays on the long dimension, and three bays long on the other side. There was one exterior door to the porch area around the living room and only one exterior door on the long dimension. The part of the porch outside the kitchen was called the dining porch. The living room had a central fireplace. The plan called for the removal of a partition between the living room and Room #1 and indicated repairs to the stairs. The kitchen was a box with no appliances indicated. There was a half bath under the stairs, but there was no tub indicated anywhere in the house. Remember knotty pine? Room #1 was to have knotty pine on all its walls. Sheet [2] Second Floor Plan The stairs came up to a small hallway which gave access to three rooms. The plan called for new flooring in Room No. 3 and a door to the top of the big porch. Room No. [5] was to have a window removed that was replaced by a door. In Room No. 4, a partition was removed, but there was no access to the porch roof. There was no bathroom on this level. Mr. Chappelear's address stamp was on the front and back of this sheet. Sheet [3] North Side Elevation The house may have been on piers, because the plan called for new lattice around the foundation area. There was a gable roof with a gable end facing the viewer and another at right angles to the main roof. All but one window was called "new." This was the only side of the house without the porch. On the second floor were two six over six light double hung windows. On the first floor, beginning in the kitchen wing was a pair of eight light casement windows. Next was a six over six light double hung window in the knotty pine room. There was a small six light window in the two piece bath, then a larger six over six light double hung window in the living room. This end of the screened porch appeared to be enclosed and had two eight light casement windows centered on the space. The railing on the porch roof was visible in two places. Sheet [4] South Side Elevation This was the long wall of the screened porch, with one screen door in the center that was two steps above the ground. The fireplace chimney rose through the middle of the gable end of the second floor, flanked by six over six light double hung windows. The roof railing ran the entire length of the porch. Sheet [5] West Front Elevation This showed the living room end of the porch and the door from Room #[5] and a six over six light double hung window in Room #4. There was a single access screen door to the porch in the middle of the space. The roof railing was the same as other elevations. There were two section drawings on this sheet. Sheet [6] Rear Elevation This showed the dining porch and kitchen wall. The steep roofline of the gable end indicated minimal headroom in the upstairs room. There was a door from that room to the porch roof tightly flanked by six over six light double hung windows. The door appeared to be two steps above the roof. The roof railing was its usual self. The dining porch had vertical paneling for wainscot and then screening above. There were four tightly spaced eight light casement windows in the kitchen; the door was at the corner. There was a section drawing for the rear wall of the kitchen.
