These 3"x5" cards were the basis for Mr. Beitzell's six part series for publication in the Enterprise in 1978 listing the names of county persons who served in the war in some capacity. The first group of cards is an alphabetical listing of St. Mary's County men who served in the Confederate Army (3 3/4"). The second group of cards is labeled St. Mary's County Confederate patriots--civilians who aided the confederate cause or were arrested for confederate sympathies (1"). The third group is labeled St. Mary's County white men in U.S. service 1861-1865 (1/2"). The fourth group is labeled St. Mary's County black men in U.S. service 1863-1865 (5 3/8"). The fifth group is labeled St. Mary's County unionists 1861-1865 (3/8"), such as federal recruiters. Some cards have considerable information about the person and often mention where the person's name has been published.Context
