I believe this to be a scan of the original and we do not have the original. [Mrs. Shafer says the location of the original is unknown] The gray toned portrait is of Robert James Hopewell. His body is positioned at a very slight angle to the camera and he is looking just to his left past the camera. His hair is parted on his left and his hairline is receding ever so slightly. His hair is combed smoothly to one side, but it is long enough to form wings above his ears. His ears probably flair out a little, but they are mostly covered by the hair. I would judge his hair to be brown. He appears to have light colored eyes. He has a generous mustache, but no other facial hair. He has on a dark suit with a wide collar and lapels and a vest that also has lapels. His shirt appears to be white with a medium sized collar and a large dark tie around and under the collar, but it does not hang down in front. He is a solemn handsome gentleman.Collection
