This is a black and white photo of an unidentified house, Rose Cottage and County Trust Co. Bank on Washington Street between the square and the courthouse. Only part of the first floor is visible of the house on the left--it appeared to have clapboard siding and large two over two windows on the first floor. Rose Cottage was a typical story and a half shingled house with a full front porch incorporated into the original roof line. The left two bays of the porch were screened and the remaining bay was open to the front door. There was one dormer visible in the roof over the front door. On the gable end, there were two six over six double hung windows on the second floor and two windows of the same type on the first floor. There were large trees in front of the house and bushes between it and the bank building. George Morgan Knight, Jr. and his mother, Grace Knight, lived in Rose Cottage in the 1950s. The bank building was small--narrow on the street side and not too deep. It was full brick. There was one large window with a transom on the left side of the front elevation and a vestibule projected from the building on the right. A demilune window with presumably the name of the bank is over the doorway. In the small space in the gable above one small Palladian window was almost entirely obscured by the alarm box. There were four or five tall narrow windows visible on the east elevation. A very small gable projected from the roof at right angles over the central windows on the side and there was a small rounded arch window in the gable. All the windows had light colored cornices, more or less elaborate depending on location. There was lots of gingerbread on the building, really more than it could carry gracefully--it was much like an overdone dollhouse. There was some sort of decoration on the roof peak, but it is impossible to see clearly. The photo was taken from across the street and shows curbs and gutters and more shrubbery. Everything was very neat and clean.
