Description

There are fourteen postcards in this collection and one letter explaining the families associated with the cards. Twelve of the postcards were mailed and two were kept as souvenirs. The cards were all mailed to Stockton in Worcester County on the eastern shore. Families associated with the cards are the deWaal family, the Loker family, the Parker family, and the Dryden family. Letter written by Mrs. Russell April 1 2002 explaining the families associated with the cards. Postcards: 1. Sepia tone card of Trinity Church in St. Mary's City when it was covered in ivy not mailed (for a detailed description, see 1995.001.1669) 2. Golden yellow and white card for St. Mary's Homecoming Week not mailed (for a detailed description, see 1995.001.2485) 3. Britons Bay from a hill in Leonardtown mailed February 11 of an illegible year where was Lovers' Grove? on Tudor Hall property? There were a couple of houses and several small outbuildings near the shore 4. Scotland Beach Hotel mailed August 14, 1923 a large two story building with porches around the first floor and in the gable on the second floor; another single story building with porches in the distance 5. Leonard Hall School mailed August 9, 1923 The school was a large brick edifice with a central bay and two bays on each side, three stories on an English basement. There was a large central entry with offices on each side of the door. The gymnasium may have been in the basement. 6. Soldiers and Sailors Monument in Leonardtown mailed July 30, 1923 The photographer deliberately removed the background, so the monument is without context. (for a similar, in in some ways, better image see 1995.001.2488) 7. Hotel St. Mary's with large striped awnings mailed June 28, 1920 The trees in front of the hotel were not large. Two cars were parked rather haphazardly in the street. 8. Main Street in Leonardtown when there was a windmill on the square mailed June 23, 1914 (for a detailed description, see 1995.001.2433) 9. Leonardtown Wharf mailed June 23, 1914 There were no boats at the wharf 10. St. Aloysius Church [second building] mailed January 16, 1909 This must have been a summer photo because all the windows were open 11. Steamer at the Leonardtown Wharf mailed October 2, 1907 barely visible text is at the bottom of the image, encouraging people to attend home coming from October 7-13 and the full program of events is on the verso 12. St. Mary's County Courthouse mailed August 17, 1907 This showed the front of the courthouse from an angle. There was no foliage around it. The porch was highly decorated. 13. Moore's Hotel mailed April 19, 1907 I can only assume this was Moore's Hotel because trees obscure everything but the fencing. 14. St. Mary's County Courthouse from Washington Street before it was paved mailed July 25, 1906 There was a five bar white fence with a stile between the building and the road. The road appeared to be in miserable condition.
