Description

Black and white photo of the first Sacred Heart Church at Bushwood. Mr. Fenwick took a picture of someone else's photo. His negative is in its own sleeve behind this photo. The church almost looks as if someone said, "Here, you can use this barn." The clapboard building was one and a half stories tall with a gable roof. The entrance to the building was in the near gable end. A square support for a small cross was built on the roof peak over the gable end, but there was no steeple at all. Two "stair-step" panels were built out from the roof on each side of the gable end in an unsuccessful attempt to make the building more imposing. Two six over six windows with shutters were in the upper story. Two single width doors, one dark and one light colored, were set wide apart on the first floor and were only a couple of steps above the ground. A picket fence marked off the front yard of the church with a gravel drive allowing for egress of parishioners. A five rail fence walled off the graveyard on the near side of the building. Five fairly tall windows were evenly spaced along the long wall of the structure. The shutters for each window were closed. There was a low open porch on the back of the building. There were a few medium sized trees that appeared to have been planted on purpose and the lower branches had been trimmed. The foreground landscape appeared not to be tended at all. ******************************************* Text on verso: "1st Catholic Church at Bushwood [Sacred Heart] Saint Mary's County, Maryland Built about 1770 Picture 1892"
