Description

Sepia tone print 4 5/16"h x 3 5/8"w of Saint Aloysius Church in Leonardtown. This shows the front of the church and the left side. It is either late spring or summer. Parishioners are exiting the church. A driveway runs along the left side and a sidewalk goes to the center of the building. A wrought iron fence surrounds the front yard of the building and the hood of an automobile of the 1930s? appears in the photo. The church has a tall octagonal roof over the bell tower. The bell tower is made of white wooden posts with decorative crosses in panels at the top and bottom of the space. In the brick space between the roof and the bell support are small circular sunburst windows on each face. There is a line of upside down crenellations on the steeple above the "second" story of the church. These motifs are badly stained by water dripping from above. There are two tall narrow double hung windows with semicircular tops in the front face of the steeple at the second story level. There are upside crenellations above the double doorway. This is indented to provide some protection and is capped with a semicircular window. On each side of the steeple is one tall double hung window with four lights each. All the windows in the front of the church appear to be stained or leaded glass. On the front of the church, the crenellations travel from the eaves to the steeple at a different angle from the roofline, giving the effect of two rooflines. There are six rectangular windows on the left side of the church with a square window several feet above each one. There appears to be a line of fleur-de-lis serving as lightning rods running the entire length of the roof peak. A power line at the street happens to bisect the photo about at the point where the steeple and roof are joined. One large tree is on the left of the driveway. ******************************************* Written on the verso in blue fountain pen ink: "St. Aloysius Church Leonardtown, Md." This piece was the top image on page 18 of the dark red photograph album.
