Description

Water color by Father Stephen Tushak of Saint Andrew's Protestant Episcopal Church, California, Md. It is a spring scene. This is a direct front view of the church. The church is rosy brick. At the two corners are two square towers with pyramidal roofs topped with crosses. The first level of each tower, ending at the top of the porch, is marked by an indention. In the lower part is a tall niche crowned by a brick arch with a keystone. In the upper section on each tower is a smaller niche crowned by an arch without a keystone. The space between the towers is bridged by a brick structure which projects from the building and is supported by square pillars which taper as they rise. This creates a covered porch for the entrance. The upper part of the entrance contains a palladian window with a broken pediment over it. The spaces between the window and the towers are plain brick and the roof over them is flat. At the bottom of the upper section is a wide white soffit which forms an additional covering between the projecting towers and the center structure. In the lower level porch is a the suggestion of doors into each tower, a center door into the church and gothic sash windows on each side of the door. The door and windows have brick arches with keystones. The towers and the porch are close to the same height, so the building does not "soar." There is a single gravestone visible in front of the church, but on the right is a fenced graveyard. Its wrought iron fence is quite elaborate and features a gate with an arched top and a centered cross. Text below image: "St. Andrew's Church Prot. Episcopal near Leonardtown St. Mary's Co.
