3 1/2"h x 5"w black and white photo of the interior of Saint Mark's Episcopal Church, in which Dr. James Thomas Notley Maddox was very active. This view was of the altar and apse. The sun shone brightly through the window in the apse, which made that area fuzzy. The ceiling was dark boards with visible arches. The opening to the apse was very tall, with a curved arch that came to a point. There was a minimal altar screen. The metal, likely brass, cross was on a stepped support on a flat surface. Two objects were hung from the altar screen, but I cannot identify them. Flags hung on poles on stands on each side of the opening. There were large white glass globes hanging from the ceiling. There was dark wainscotting about eight feet up the walls. The hymn number boards were on each side of the altar. The pews were barely visible. Window openings were visible on each side of the sanctuary; the walls must have been very thick. The photo illustrates an article by Gerald Sword about Doctor Maddox in Volume 34, No. 8 (August 1986) p. 389-396, Chronicles of St. Mary's.
