The collection is primarily records of the various organizations of school trustees and commissioners from the 1840s to 1953. There are documents by and about George Wellington Joy, examiner/superintendent from 1896-1927. There are also a few folders of material gathered by Miss Hoff in 1966/1967. The contents of the folded, bundled, and tied sheets include resolutions and orders of the commissioners, correspondence of the examiner (later superintendent), financial records of school building expenses, books and supplies, payment of teachers, commissioners and others, the overall budget, petitions from the public for the establishment of schools, copies of teachers' examinations for a teaching certificate, a few examples of student examinations, and information and directives from the state Department of Public Instruction. These papers also include some records from the county Register of Wills, who was responsible for the funds of the schools during the 1850s. There are also some very early records of the Saint Mary's Savings Institution, probably because George Combs, who was Secretary/Treasurer of the Commissioners at one point, was also a founder of that savings institution. There are also records of an estate administration involving Edward Mattingly. It is not clear why the Mattingly material is in this collection. Beginning in 1900 and running until the 1924/25 school year, the papers are primarily the Superintendent's correspondence, covering most of the above topics. Another sizable component of the collection is in book form: school registers, attendance records, annual reports filed with the state, records of teacher's certificates, receipt books for teachers' salaries and school expenses and one book covering the 1937 Saint Mary's County track and field competition. Miss Hoff's folders include some Board minutes, forms used by the district, teacher applications, and material on the district's science curriculum.Collection
