Saint Mary's Female Seminary in 1934Entry/Object ID
2015.007.0004Description
Digital scan of a 6 5/8" h x 8 1/2" w black and white aerial photo of St. Mary's Female Seminary, Brome's Wharf, Trinity Church and graveyard, and the reconstructed Maryland State House. The ground around the State House was raw. This photo was taken either right before or right after the Tercentenary celebration. Calvert Hall, St. Mary's Hall, the White House, and the water tower are visible in the photo. The seminary had its own pier just to the left of Brome's Wharf. The roof of Trinity Church was visible in the trees, with the headstones and Calvert Monument scattered around the graveyard. Something was going on in the middle of the road by the State House, perhaps the erection or dismantling of a large pole. "18 A" is in white ink, barely visible in the lower left corner of the image.

The photograph was possibly taken by Aloysius King, editor of the St. Mary's Beacon. The original print is owned by Historic St. Mary's City, which loaned it to the St. Mary's County Historical Society for scanning.Collection
