This is a 1940 photo, part of a series of Farm Security Administration photos, of Sarah Gant, who was called Sally. The woman is standing on a porch in front of a white clapboard house. There is a 6 over 6 double hung window behind her and a porch post next to her. Mrs. Gant is not looking at the camera and does not appear to be happy to have her picture taken. She is not heavy, but she has lost her shape. She is wearing a wide brim straw hat with a plaid pattern overall. She has a broad nose and a straight mouth with heavy wrinkles and pouches around her eyes. Her hands are folded next to her sides. She has on a shirtwaist dress with a pointed collar of the same material. The pattern may be large flowers. It was probably a short sleeve dress to begin with, but Mrs. Gant added more material of a different pattern to make long sleeves. The dress is mid-calf length. Mrs. Gant has on an apron of a solid color that begins at her waist and ends a few inches above her knees. She is wearing heavy cotton stockings and lace up boots. Just below her name is "grandmother of Evelyn Hewlett." Below her image is the catchphrase for the exhibit, "Celebrating the Women of St. Mary's County's Past."Collection
