Scope and Content

1 folder ; 11 3/4" x 9 5/8" Series E savings bonds were first sold in May 1941. The Treasury Dept. relied on volunteer banks to sell and service these "war bonds." This folder contains examples of the endless paperwork associated with the bonds; the forms in this folder have to do with the process of changing the ownership of bonds already issued. Simple undated form called Request for Correction or Re-issue of United States Defense Savings Bonds, Series E More complicated form rev. August 1942 called Request for Reissue of United States Savings Bonds to Correct Error in Registration with which the bonds were sent to the Merchandise Mart in Chicago to be reissued. A bank officer had to certify the request and there was a spot to put the bank's seal, effectively notarizing the transaction. October 24, 1941 A member of staff at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond advised a member of the County Trust staff to add "Mrs." to a bond January 24, 1942 Apparently the County Trust staff did not have the aforementioned forms because he sent a letter to Richmond asking how to add a name to a bond. March 24, 1943 In this letter, the Trust's cashier asked for correction of the issuing date of a bond--the stamp date was a year later than the issuing date, which was an error September 18, 1943 An even more complicated form requesting a change from Payable on Death to co-ownership of 3 bonds. This may have been to avoid taxes. November 3, 1943 A similar situation--Mr. Snyder wanted to add his wife's name as co-owner January 6, 1944 A wife wanted to add her husband's name as co-owner January 17, 1944 Mr. Norris asked for the re-issue of several bonds February 26, 1944 The Trust asked the Federal Reserve in Baltimore for a form to report the loss of a bond and to request a reissue July 24, 1944 A bondholder had bought several bonds to be Pay on Death to her father, but when she married, she asked that the bonds be reissued to have her new husband as co-owner. Her father, as the previous beneficiary, had to consent to the change. August 3, 1944 Another example of changing Pay on Death to co-owner
