Series E savings bonds were first sold in May 1941. The Treasury Dept. relied on volunteer banks to sell and service these "war bonds." This folder contains memos from the main office of the County Trust Company to its branches about how to manage the sale of the bonds, especially how to keep the main office informed of branch sales figures.
April 25, 1941 To the branch cashiers from Senator Coad, president of the company, calling their attention to the procedure for remitting bond sale money to the government and how to order more bonds. He encouraged the men to take an ad in the local paper to help sales.
October 30, 1941 Memo from H. Gordon Kitchen, vice president of the company to S. M. Jones, cashier at the Leonardtown Branch. Kitchen asked for sales totals on Series F and G bonds and explained the multi-part form for the sale of Series F bonds.
December 11, 1941 Mr. Kitchen to Mr. Jones--old-style Series E bonds may only be sold until December 31. Mr. Jones was to estimate how many of the new bond issue he was likely to need for the first three months of 1942 so the main office could make a bulk order.
February 26, 1942 Mr. Kitchen to Mr. Jones reminding him of the new directive to send the proceeds of bond sales to the Baltimore Branch of the Richmond Fed. You could almost feel exasperation rising from the page.Collection
