Scott Lawrence was descended from the Hammetts. At one point, he started to research his forebears and discovered that one or more were buried at St. Nicholas Church in Pearson. The church had been engulfed by the Patuxent River Naval Air Station and all the gravestones had been laid down and covered. Scott had taken courses and apprenticeships to learn how to explore and restore cemeteries and gravestones. Using this experience, he proposed to the base commander that his company, Grave Concerns, find and re-install the stones in the cemetery. He was first allowed to locate and restore the gravestones of twelve veterans and the work went on from there. Scott has done similar work in other cemeteries around Maryland and has become an authority on private cemeteries in Saint Mary's County.
This material is largely paper files of information about cemeteries and cemetery projects. There are CDs with details about the St. Nicholas project and a few photographs of historic documents. There is background information on the veterans buried at Pax River.Collection
