1976.003.0001Scope and Content
Bound volume used as a commonplace book, scrapbook, and notebook, probably by Eliza G. Stone during the 19th century. 1 item.
This was found with three other pieces in a box in the front basement in 2019. 12"h x 3 3/4"w tall thin bound volume that had been repurposed into a commonplace book, notebook, and scrapbook. It probably mostly belonged to Eliza G. Stone. This is a very difficult book. Poetry cut from newspapers has been glued to many pages. There is lots of difficult handwriting in both pen and pencil. The pages are not numbered. Someone spent time trying to pick away at the newspaper to see the text underneath, not always successfully. There are some blank pages scattered through the book. Occasionally, sketches of small heads in profile appear, both men and women. There are a few obituaries and handwritten genealogical notes with family names and dates. On one page there is a long list of fruit trees planted in back of the house. As was common in the 19th century, other people wrote saccharine poetry and stories in the book. There are many small loose newspaper poetry clippings inside the back cover.Collection
