Black and white photo 8"h x 10"w of the center hall of Sotterley. I believe the camera is facing northeast. The Chinese Chippendale staircase is on the left, the door to the addition is under the staircase and the door to the parlor is on the right. There may be dark carpet on the floor with a small rug on top. There is a very elaborate Chinese chandelier hanging from the cross beam. There is a sword on the wall above one door and a rifle on the wall above another. There is an elaborately framed oriental mirror on the wall reflecting some of the staircase. There is a sideboard under the mirror supporting an open liquor case and several candlesticks. A two person chair awaits guests. There is a floor lamp in the staircase corner. The paneling has been painted. The open door to the parlor is a dark color, but the door to the room in the addition seems to be the same color as the walls.

Text on verso: This used to be taped to the verso, but only the tape stains are left . The text was photocopied onto permanent paper. "A Chinese Chippendale staircase graces Sotterley Mansion's center hall. A masterpiece of hand carving, it is complete save for a tiny piece of railing -- the carver was a bond servant whose seven-year indenture ended before the final piece was finished."Collection
