Sotterley fences in the springEntry/Object ID
1995.001.1651Description
Black and white photo 8"h x 10"w of the fences and main driveway on the land side of Sotterley. It was taken in the spring. I believe the camera is facing south. One drive passes across the photo between various styles of fencing. In the center of the photo is a wrought iron gate supported by brick posts that leads from the field in which the photographer is standing onto this driveway. Across the driveway is a similar gate between brick posts that gives access to the circular drive that goes to the main entrance to the house. On either side of this gate is a white picket fence; each picket is carved to look somewhat like a javelin. On the left side behind the fence is a small one story building with a porch, a center door and one or more windows with dark shutters. The porch roof is supported by round pillars. It was often used as a school. On the grounds are many large trees just leafing out and on the right is a huge forsythia bush in full bloom. The house is a story and a half with an ell coming toward the camera about a third of the way down the roof from the left and another addition is at the end of the house on the right. There is another building just visible on the right that is connected to the main house. The roof has four dormers with hip roofs; the main roof slopes slowly to incorporate a large porch in an ell shape. The small dormers have six over six windows and may have shutters. The large wing has a gable roof at right angles to the main roof. Its gable end is completely covered by ivy, but two quarter moon windows are visible in its attic. It has a porch on each long side. Only one window is visible on the first floor of the main house and there is a window in the addition, but detail is obscured.
