Black and white photo 8"h x 10"w of the gate and main driveway on the land side of Sotterley. It was taken in the late spring. I believe the camera is facing south. A wrought iron double gate between brick posts gives access to the circular drive that goes to the main entrance to the house. The two halves of the gate are supported by a small 6-8" concrete post in the center of the space. The brick posts are crowned by white globes. On either side of the gate is a white picket fence; each picket is carved to look somewhat like a javelin. On the grounds are many large trees. The house is barely visible beyond the foliage--just a few porch posts, one window on the first floor and one dormer in the roof.
