Black and white photo 8"h x 10"w of the parlor of Sotterley. I believe the camera is facing east. Sotterley is justly famous for its beautiful paneling and carving. This photo centers on the fireplace with multi-level moldings around the fireplace, a carved mantle and the lovely Greek key framing around the rectangular panel above the fireplace. No paintings or other decoration are on the panel. There are five white and blue? ceramic pieces on the mantle and a small crystal candleholder on each end. There are deep niches on each side of the fireplace. The walls of the niches are plain below the chair rail and simply decorated with two vertical rectangles above the rail. The triumph is a large beautifully carved dimensional shell at the top of each niche. There is a demilune table in each niche with a three stem candelabra on each table. There are andirons in front of the firebox, a bellows hanging from a hook on the left side of the opening, and fireplace tools in a stand on the right. There is a generous stone hearth. The room is carpeted and has a small oriental rug right in front of the fireplace. On the right is a wooden bench with cane seats. Next to it is a tiny round table with flowers in a vase and a glimpse of another chair. On the left is a settee designed to seat three people. Next to it is an oval vitrine table, but its contents are not visible. There is a wooden chair with an upholstered seat next to that. Next to the wall behind these pieces is a chair and an oval table with a huge spray of dogwood branches and flowers. All the paneling is painted a light color. Light from the outside comes from the right.
