This booklet chronicles the history and service of the First Maryland Regiment of the United States Volunteer Infantry. It has lists of officers and men, photos, and several pages of text about the Regiment. This Regiment was developed from the First Regiment of the Maryland National Guard. Four companies were from Baltimore, two from towns on the eastern shore, one from southern Maryland, one from the northern counties, and four from western Maryland. Benjamin Duke was a private in Company I. The regiment spent a miserable month at Camp Wilmer, then went to Fort Monroe in Virginia, then to Camp Meade in Pennsylvania, and finally to Camp Mackenzie in Augusta, Georgia. At the end of February 1899, the regiment was mustered out without seeing action. The booklet was printed by a job printer in Augusta. It has a colorful paper cover with appropriate patriotic symbols. Included in the booklet was a small card, somewhat like a business card, that probably indicated the copy belonged to B. H. Duke of Company I.Collection
