17 1/8"h x 15 1/2"w x 1 1/2"d brown leather bound ledger with maroon and gold accents and green, blue, gold, and white faux marbling on the inside covers and fly leaves with a heavy teal buckram spine support. The spine has four ridges and five panels. The title of the book is in the second panel from the top, the middle panel says "St. Mary's County" in gold, the next panel has "1916-17" hand written in white ink, and the bottom panel says "Meyer & Thalheimer Makers Baltimore." Cover page 2 has a white label in the center of the space advising the user that the book was Order No. 53881 if it had to be replaced. There were two blank pages and then the ruled pages began. Each page was numbered in blue and preprinted at the top with "School No." and "District No." There were columns in red for Date, Cash Book Folio, Name of Item or Expense, Rent, Fuel, Repairs, Apparatus and Furniture, Teachers' Salaries, New Buildings, Sanitary Cost, Incidentals, Kindergarten Manual Training, and Total Amount. The first entries are for white schools through page 55, followed by blank pages 56-59, and then entries for the Colored schools began on pages 60-89. Pages 90-252 are not used. There are two leaves of heavy paper between the ruled pages and cover page 3. The entries for each school were by month; white schools met from September to June and the Colored schools met from October to April. Teachers were paid based on the level of their teaching certificates and the number of teaching days in the month, ranging from $40-$92 for white teachers and $25-$55 for African-American teachers.
