Description

16 3/8"h x 11"w x 1 1/2"d ledger with brown leather covers and maroon and gold leather accents. There were five panels on the spine. The 2d from the top said "School Expense Ledger," the middle panel had "1917-1922" handwritten in white, the next panel said "Board of Education St. Mary's County," and the bottom panel had a piece of adhesive tape that said "1917-1922" in reddish ink. Cover p. 2 and 3 and flyleaves were of faux marbling in maroon, cream, and gold. Both front and back had heavy buckram spine supports. On the center of Cover P. 2, there was a green label informing the user that this was model No. 17643 in case the book ever needed to be replaced. At some point, the upper third of the edge of the text bloc had been wet for a considerable period; besides staining, some information was lost. The book was set up with pairs of pages, called folios, beginning with 1 and ending with 151. The entire book was used. The left page header said School No. __, District No. ___ and the right page header said School Expense Ledger. Columns included Date, Cash Book Folio, Salary of Teachers, Textbooks, Materials of Instruction, Other Costs of Instruction, Janitors' Wages, Janitors' Supplies, Fuel, Other Costs of Operation, Repairs ... Upkeep of Grounds, Repair and Replacement of Equipment, Other Costs of Maintenance, Library, Health Service, Other ..., Land, New Buildings and Equipment, Alteration of Old Buildings, Equipment of Old Buildings, Total. Three years of data were on each folio, with lines for each month school was in session during 1917, 1918, and 1919. The white schools were on folios 1-55, folio 56 was blank, then Colored Schools started on folio 57 to 86, the Industrial School was on folio 87, folio 88 was blank, and entries for the white schools resumed on folio 89. There were typically two years of entries: 1920-1921 and 1921-1922 in the second group. The folios ran until 143. On folio 144, the entries for colored schools began. Since their school year was shorter, it was possible to fit four schools on each page, with entries ending on folio 151. The Industrial School was not specifically mentioned in this second group of folios. No names were entered in this book, just numbers.
