Description

16 1/4"h x 11 1/4"w brown leather bound ledger with maroon and gold accents. The inside covers and fly leaves were in brown, yellow, and cardinal red faux marbling with a stout red buckram spine support. On Cover P. 2, the was a white label that said the book was No. 25390 from the Dulany-Vernay Co. if the book had to be re-ordered. There were five panels on the spine. The second panel said "School Expense Ledger," the third panel said "Board of Education" in gold and "1922-1928" in white ink, the fourth panel said "Saint Mary's County." The first un-numbered sheet had "School Expense Ledger" for a header. The next sheet began the numbering in pairs, so each pair was called a folio. The header on the left said "School No. ___" and "District No. ___" while the left page said "School Expense Ledger." Columns included Date, Cash Book Folio, Salary of Teachers, Textbooks, Materials of Instruction, Other Costs of Instruction, Janitors' Wages, Janitors' Supplies, Fuel, Other Costs of Operation, Repairs ... Upkeep of Grounds, Repair and Replacement of Equipment, Other Costs of Maintenance, Library, Health Service, Other Auxiliary Services, Land, New Buildings and Equipment, Alteration of Old Buildings, Equipment of Old Buildings, Total. Teachers' salaries were listed, but no names provided. Four years of data were on each folio: 1922/23, 1923/24. 1924/25, 1925/26. The months were listed on each line with pertinent expenses recorded. Folio 1 was for School No. 1, District No. 1 and that pattern continued through folio 54. Folio 55 was for Mechanicsville High School, folio 56 was for River Springs High School, and then folios 57-88 were for the African-American schools. Folio 89 was for the Colored Industrial Department, but only for 1924/25 and 1925/26. Folio 90 was for Charlotte Hall School and folio 91 was for Saint Mary's Female Seminary. Somehow, the county paid for textbooks and other materials of instruction. Folio 92 covered Mechanicsville High School and River Springs High School for 1926/1927. Folio 93 started over with the white school expenses by school for 1926/27 and 1927/28. Expenses for just two years left enough room on each folio for two schools. The pattern continued through folio 113. Folio 114 was for School #1, District #9 on top and School #6, District #6, which only met from September to December and the Branch School #6, which did meet all of 1927/28. Folio 115 was for Consolidated Great Mills in 1926/27. That is the first appearance of the word "Consolidated." The other two schools in that folio were in district #8. On folio 116 were the expenses for Mechanicsville and River Springs High Schools in 1927/28. Folio 117 was the beginning of the listings for the African-American school expenses for 1926/27 and 1927/28. There were two schools per folio until folio 131. The Industrial School was listed on the bottom half of folio 128. Folios 132-159 were un-used. There were two un-numbered pages between that and Cover P. 3.
