1985.001.0156Description
17 1/4"h x 15"w x 1 1/4"d brown leather bound ledger with maroon and gold accents and black and bright green mottled papers on the inside covers and fly leaves. The spine has four ridges and five panels. The title of the book is in the second panel from the top, and the Board of School Commissioners St. Mary's Co. is in the second panel from the bottom. 1901-1916 is hand-written on the middle panel. Cover page 2 has a bright green label in the center of the space in which the publisher, Wm. J. C. Dulany Co., Baltimore, gives the model number of the book. The pages are numbered. The system uses one page per school. The left edge of each page carried the year date and listed the school terms. The top axis showed columns for rent, fuel, repairs, furniture, teachers' salaries, buildings, sanitary costs, incidentals, kindergarten/manual training which was used for total expenses instead. The election district and school number were at the top of the page, but the teachers' names were not included. White schools were always listed first, with African-American, aka "colored," schools listed next. This large book had data for several school years: 1901/1902--1908/1909 consistently and sometimes additional years. Pages 1-45 were white schools to 1909, pages 46-75 were all marked colored schools, pages 76-81 seem to be schools that started after 1901 and their dates go up into the 19teens, pages 82-130 is the second date progression for the white schools, pages 131-160 is the second date progression for colored schools, page 161 is labeled "Special" school with entries from 1914-1916, pages 162-164 cover 3 schools that missed their proper place in the listings, pages 165-252 are blank. Two sheets of tiny figures are loose at the end of the book, but there is no indication of which schools provided the data. The only school specifically identified is the Branch school, whose entries are out of sequence in each case. A random example for School 3 in District 3 shows a total expense of $424 for 1908/1909, $358 for 1909/1910, $352 for 1910/1911, $370 for 1911/1912, and $357 for 1912/1913.Collection
