Description

Black and white 4"h x 5"w photo of St. Aloysius Church as it was in 1880. In this photo, taken from across the road, the church is obscured by trees. It appears to be a substantial building with a very large spire. The six sided spire is shingled in alternating bands of color and is topped with a cross. The cupola for the bell has fairly elaborate gingerbread. The decoration at the eaves has an Italianate flavor. The windows are very tall and narrow, twelve over twelve lights with a round arch at the top. There is one window on each side of the entrance and possibly five windows on the long side. The is a five bar fence across the front of the yard, probably a parking lot on the left and another fence on the far side of the lot. The fence is broken on the right side of the church to leave space for a short metal pole. There is some sort of light fixture next to the fence that may be in line with the entrance to the church. Text on the page, provided by Mr. Fenwick: "St. Aloysius Church Leonardtown The cornerstone of the new St. Aloysius Church was laid on Sept. 1, 1846. Father Joseph Enders presided at the ceremony, assisted by Fathers Joseph Carbery and Robert Woodley. The trustees and members of the Building Committee were: George Combs, John Greenwell, Dr. Wm. Edelen, Leo Spalding, John Millard, Samuel Spalding, Baker Brook, George A. Spalding, Dr. H.
