Description

Black and white official Navy photo 8 3/8"h x 7"w of the participants in the ceremony on St. Clement's Island on October 12, 1958. There was a celebration of forty years of Navy management of the island, but plans were afoot to turn the island over to the State of Maryland. Mr. Fenwick and Mr. Beitzell were leading the effort to have it be a memorial to the original settlers of Maryland. The five men are standing in a field near the fenced off area around the large cross. One woman in dark glasses is behind and to the right of the group and a large number of people were standing on the other side of the fenced area looking out at the Potomac. Caption under the photo: "Edwin W. Beitzell, Editor, Chronicles of St. Mary's Charles A. Dancey, Cdr. USN, Ast. Cdr. for Management Father Calvert Brown, S.J., St. Francis Xavier Charles E.
