1995.001.1644Description
Black and white photo 8"h x 10"w on heavy photographic paper of the cross on St. Clement's Island. For many years, the island was owned by the U.S. Navy. The Navy deeded it to the State of Maryland. There was heavy pressure to allow it to be a memorial to the early settlers who had landed on the island when they first arrived in the area. The large cross was erected at the time of the tercentenary of Maryland. A small area at the bottom of the cross was fenced off with chainlink and plantings had been put there. At the time of this photo, the garden was completely overgrown. The gate to the area was open. An osprey was nesting on the top of the cross.
