Black and white photo 8"h x 10"w on heavy photographic paper of the shoreline of St. Clement's Island. For many years, the island was owned by the U.S. Navy. The Navy deeded it to the State of Maryland. There was heavy pressure to allow it to be a memorial to the early settlers who had landed on the island when they first arrived in the area. The St. Mary's County Historical Society, among others, wanted the state to install rip-rap around the island to slow erosion. This photo shows the shoreline of the island with fallen trees on the beach. There is no person in the picture to give one an idea of the height of the sand bank.
