2019.009.0028Description
5"h x 8"w black and white photo of a locomotive built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works for the Government Hospital for the Insane, aka St. Elizabeth's. There were three pair of driving wheels for this engine. There may have been coupling equipment on the front, plus a large illuminated light pointing forward. The road number 3 was on the side of the light, the center of the front, and the side of the cab. The tall flared smokestack came next. It was followed by a dome, the bell, and two more domes, all on the firebox. A whistle was attached to the dome behind the bell. The cab had two windows on the side, a door, and a catwalk along the back. The front of the cab had at least two, and likely four, windows pointing front. "Government Hospital for the Insane" was in large letters" on the side of the firebox. That was the official name of the facility it served, but it was known to all the world as St. Elizabeth's.
