Black and white 3 1/2"h x 3 1/2"w photo of the interior of St. Francis Xavier Church at Newtown. This view is of the altar. There is a barrel vault ceiling. On the east wall is an elaborately carved pediment with the dove of the Holy Spirit in the triangle and a full length portrait of St. Francis Xavier? below. Six vases of flowers are on the "steps" below the portrait. The tabernacle is in a model of a domed and pedimented building with a curtain in the opening. The altar is carved wood with a lace and velvet? cover. A football shaped outline on the front of the altar surrounds IHS. There is a statue on each side of the altar on the east wall. The one on the left is probably St. Mary and the one on the right may be Jesus and the Sacred Heart. On the left is a visible door to the sacristy. An elaborate arrangment of chains and metal filigree hangs from the ceiling on the left of the altar to support a red? glass candle holder.
