Description

Black and white photograph 3 1/2"h x 3 1/2"w of the interior of St. Ignatius Church in St. Inigoes. Mr. Fenwick wrote, "This church was built in 1736 and is the third church built in St. Inigoes Manor. It is the oldest Catholic Parish in English speaking America." This view is of nearly the entire sanctuary. There are several "steps" behind the altar, one of which contains the tabernacle. The altar cloth has lace edges. There are two pillars on each end of the altar face that set off a painting of Christ recumbent. The altar rail appears to be of dark wood or is painted a dark color. On each side of the altar are doors to the sacristy. Above each door a backdrop is painted on the wall and surrounded by molding and other decorations. Each space has a statue mounted on the wall. Between the painted space and the wall of the building are elaborate paintings--the one on the right has crossed keys, an orb, a book, a shepherd's crook and other elements. The painting on the left has a ladder, but the other elements are not visible. Some of the gallery on each side of the church is visible and the double aisles and pew boxes on the first floor are visible. ******************************************* Text on verso: "Picture 146 St. Ignatius at St. Inigoes 1953" This photo was on page 45 of Binder 1.
