Description

Black and white photograph 3 1/2"h x 3 1/2"w of the interior of St. Ignatius Church in St. Inigoes. Mr. Fenwick wrote, "This church was built in 1736 and is the third church built in St. Inigoes Manor. It is the oldest Catholic Parish in English speaking America." This view is of one side of the sanctuary. The barrel vault is painted with many decorations. A small bit of the altar and the lace edged altar cloth is visible here. To the right of the altar an arch is painted on the wall and surrounded by molding and other decorations. The space has a statue of ? Peter? mounted on the wall. A door to the sacristy is below the statue. Between the statue's space and the wall of the building is an elaborate painting with crossed keys, an orb, a book, a shepherd's crook and other elements. The altar rail is visible and some of the pews on the first level. There is a decorative band on the wall above the pews and just below the windows of the side wall. Part of the gallery and its pews are visible on the right. ******************************************* Text on verso: "Picture 148 St. Ignatius at St. Inigoes 1953" This photo was on page 46 of Binder 1.
