Description

Black and white photograph 3 1/2"h x 3 1/2"w of the interior of St. Ignatius Church in St. Inigoes. Mr. Fenwick wrote, "This church was built in 1736 and is the third church built in St. Inigoes Manor. It is the oldest Catholic Parish in English speaking America." This view is of the east end of the interior of the building, focussing on the altar. A portrait of Christ crucified is in the center of the wall, surrounded by grooved moldings. There are several "steps" down from the portrait to the altar, one of which contains the tabernacle. The tabernacle appears to be white, probably with gold outlining. There are two small pillars with crown molding on top around a rectangular door with a round arch traced on it. Inside the arch is a cross. Above the door is a horizontal rectangle with tapered ends. There is a cross on the top of the tabernacle. The altar cloth has lace edges. On the front of the altar are two pillars on each end that set off a painting of Christ recumbent. ******************************************* Text on verso: "Picture 144 St. Ignatius at St. Inigoes 1953" This photo was on page 45 of Binder 1.
