Description

Water color by Father Stephen J. Tushak of Saint John's Palace in Saint Mary's City, Maryland. It is a summer scene. This is a two and a half story brick building with stepped gabled roof ends, single stack outside end chimneys at each end, and a center chimney. All the chimneys have corbels. On the visible side are two high stepped gable dormers which project past the eaves and are built to the ground to form alcoves in the house. The left dormer has a weathervane at the very top and a small window centered in the peak. The right dormer has neither of these features. Each dormer has a large double casement window with a flat arch on top. The top of the window appears to be higher than the eaves. There are three other smaller windows on the second floor whose tops end right at the roof line. On the first floor there are four large casement windows, one large window in the right dormer base and a recessed arched entryway in the left dormer base. A darker brick is used from ground level to about three feet up the walls. This makes an attractive accent. Basement windows are visible. At the visible end, the only windows are in the attic: one on each side of the chimney stack. To the left of the building and set back is a small building with a scalloped gable face and an arched double door. It might be a stable. Next to it is a tiny white building with a pyramid roof and the suggestion of a door facing the viewer. To the right of the house and back from it is another such white building with a door. Next to that is a story and a half white building with a gable roof and an outside end chimney at the far end. There appears to be a door on ground level and a window in the attic. In front of that is a square brick one story building with a trumpet roof and scallops on the eaves, surmounted by a large weather vane. A small fence protects its door, which faces the main house, and there are two small windows in the visible wall. There is one more white building which looks like painted logs. There is elaborate landscaping and paths all around. Text within image: "St. John's Palace St. Mary's City St. Mary's County, Maryland" Text on verso: "Painted by Rev. Stephen J.
