Water color by Father Stephen J. Tushak of Saint Mary's County Courthouse in Leonardtown, Md. The large two or three story building is carefully balanced. Its main block has a hip roof and all the other parts have gable roofs. The entire structure sits high on a white stone foundation. The main block has a three bay porch in the middle capped by a flat roof with a white soffit and supported by four white pillars. Above the porch, in the center of the building is a large fanlight. It is framed by a brick arch. The whole is framed again by a double course brick arch and a rectangle of brick frames the entire space. An iron eagle graces the scene. Under the porch roof, a double wooden door with a fanlight is flanked by two fanlight windows at the same height as the one over the door. Brick arches outline all the fanlights. Under the flanking fanlights are rectangles created by contrasting brick. The parts of the building forming the sides of the porch have the appearance of small wings. On the lower level, on each wing, is a tall, narrow niche with a nine over nine double hung window with green shutters. Each window has a substantial white sill. Under each window is another rectangle created by contrasting brick. Two rows of contrasting brick delineate the upper level. Each side has a large rectangle created by contrasting brick. On each side of the main block, a hyphen connects to a gable roof building oriented ninety degrees to the rest of the court. Each hyphen has one door with a three over three transom light topped with a flat arch. Five steps lead up to these doors. On the second floor, each hyphen has a green-shuttered window and rising from the center of each roof is a square chimney. Each of the wings has a two and half story niche outlined in brick. Within the niche, on each floor, are green shuttered windows. Contrasting brick joins the eaves to the niche. In the middle of the spacious lawn is a flagpole with a flag.
