Black and white photo of the St. Mary's County Courthouse of 1831-1899. The multi-story building was brick with a large central block with a hipped roof and two story gable roofed buildings on each side connected by hyphens to the main section. The upper portion of the main section, about one third of the total height, had brickwork suggesting window openings, but no glass, except in the center where there was a large demilune window inset in the center. A brick arch and white painted brick enhanced the effect of the arch. The sides of the lower space had tall curved arches with very tall windows centered in each arch. The center of the lower two-thirds of the building was marked by four white "pillars," more brick rectangles, a demilune window on each side of the central door and a larger demilune window over the double door. The right wing had a twelve over twelve window with tall shutters on the first floor and possibly a six over six window with shutters on the second floor. The windows were centered under a rounded arch. In the hyphen was a door with steps on the first floor and a window with shutters on the second floor. There was a large chimney in the hyphen also. The appearance of the wing on the left was almost completely obscured by vines that had grown up and over the roof. A chimney was visible there also. Five men are standing on the lawn near the building watching the photographer work. Several large trees in the lawn probably complicated the picture-taking.
