1980.001.0375Description
8" h x 10"w sepia tone photo of St. Peter's Church on Capitol Hill. The church was founded in 1820 by a group of Catholic men, including several from St. Mary's county families. The church burned on March 17, 1940, but was quickly rebuilt. Its old altar rail was donated to Holy Face Church in Great Mills. The new building opened on Easter Sunday, April 13, 1941. The distinctive text running along the walls under the clerestory windows helped to identify the photo. All the architectural elements are light colored, but the pews are very dark. The altar looks like a patriotic monument somewhere in the District. There are a few mosaics in the aisles.
Text on verso: One small circular black stamp "Capitol Photo Service Wash., D.C." A printout of the church's history is included in the mylar sleeve.Collection
