Description

This is an enlargement of an old photograph of some of the Union officers who served at Point Lookout prison. The house behind them was probably no. 42 on the aerial view lithograph of Point Lookout--the brigadier-general's house. Eleven men in dark uniforms with two other soldiers standing behind them holding flags were lined up at one corner of the house. They assumed various poses and nearly all had made sure a sword was prominently displayed. About half the men had long tunics and all but two men had dark trousers. Four men had double rows of gold buttons above the waist and the rest had a single row. The older, thus higher ranking? officers, had large hats with a complete brim, but the rest all had standard issue caps with a small brim. Nearly all the men wore gauntlet style light colored gloves. The trees behind the men were tall, straight, and slender and were probably pine trees. The house was large, light-colored clapboard with a hipped roof. Two large chimneys at right angles to each other pierced the peak of the roof. The narrow end of the second story had two four over four double hung windows with dark shutters, while the wide side had three pairs of four over four double hung windows with dark shutters. The verge board around the eaves was scalloped. On the long side of the first floor was a full size porch of three bays. It had an elaborate verge board on the eaves and the supporting posts had some decoration also. There was a single story addition on part of the narrow end of the house with a six over six window with dark shutters just visible. ***************************************************** Text on the verso: in pencil "General Barnes and staff at Point Lookout ca. 1865" Text cut from an unknown source: Explanation about the prison and a list of the men in the photo "from left to right, not counting the two soldiers holding the flags they are: Dr. A.
